WILTSHIRE POLICE – Speed Awareness Workshops

27 August 2010

Wiltshire Police has introduced a Speed Awareness Scheme (SAW) to educate drivers about the dangers of driving at excessive and inappropriate speeds.

Drivers that are detected speeding in Wiltshire, where the offence falls within a certain criteria, may be offered a course as an alternative to the Fixed Penalty process. This means that they will not have to pay the £60 fine or get the penalty points but are given the chance to pay a course fee and attend a workshop.

A driver is only able to attend one course in three years and any subsequent offence will follow the normal Fixed Penalty process.

What does the course cover?

  • The consequences of excessive and inappropriate speeds, both in financial and human terms
  • Information and advice on road safety issues
  • Hazard perception
  • Recognising speed limits
  • Tips for safer driving
  • Your responsibility, both as a driver and to other road users

Each course is classroom based and presented by trained and experienced tutors. The course consists of a combination of presented information and interactive exercises and discussions.

Not all detected offences are eligible for a SAW and each offender has to fill certain criteria before being invited to attend a course.

Sessions take place at venues in Swindon, Salisbury, and Bath.

On successful completion of the course, drivers will have an increased awareness of road safety issues and enhanced skills that they can apply to their every day driving.
